Former Bayern Munich striker Sandro Wagner is reportedly the leading candidate to become the new head coach of Hannover 96. The 2. Bundesliga club dismissed Christian Titz following a disappointing start to the season and is now in negotiations with Wagner.
According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Hannover 96 views Wagner as their top target. While negotiations are underway, no agreement has been reached, and Wagner will not immediately begin training sessions with the team. This potential move represents a chance for Wagner to return to head coaching after leaving FC Augsburg last December.
Wagner previously managed SpVgg Unterhaching and served as an assistant coach with the German national team alongside Julian Nagelsmann. His tenure at Augsburg began with a 3-1 victory over Freiburg, but the team subsequently earned only seven points from their next 11 Bundesliga matches, leading to his dismissal after a 3-0 defeat to Hoffenheim. Augsburg later finished ninth in the Bundesliga under Manuel Baum.
Hannover 96 hopes to provide Wagner with an opportunity to rebuild his reputation in the 2. Bundesliga and lead the club back to the top flight. Wagner’s previous success at Unterhaching, where he earned promotion, and his experience with the German national team are seen as assets. The club believes this could be a chance for Wagner to prove that his time at Augsburg was an anomaly rather than a reflection of his coaching abilities.
