Sanju Samson has been included in India’s T20I squad for the upcoming series against Afghanistan, prompting discussion about potential opening combinations. Former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta suggests pairing Samson with teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who recently impressed in the Zimbabwe series.
Samson’s return offers another opportunity to solidify his place at the top of the order after being dropped from the playing XI following three unsuccessful matches. He was previously named Player of the Tournament in India’s T20 World Cup campaign earlier this year. The team management has been experimenting with batting combinations since then, particularly regarding the opening slot.
Sooryavanshi has quickly risen through the ranks, earning a spot in the senior side after a strong showing in the IPL. He recently led India in run-scoring against Zimbabwe with 151 runs in three innings, averaging 50.33 with a strike rate of 196.10. His performance included a match-winning 81 and two half-centuries, earning him the Player of the Series award and helping India secure their first series victory under newly appointed T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, after losses to Ireland and England.
Dasgupta believes the Afghanistan series presents a chance to test the Samson-Sooryavanshi pairing, noting that India has already tried Samson with Abhishek Sharma and Sooryavanshi with Abhishek. “We haven't seen the Sanju-Vaibhav combination yet,” Dasgupta said on his YouTube channel. “So far, we've seen Abhishek-Vaibhav and Abhishek-Sanju, right? It's not a bad idea to even try and see what kind of combination Sanju and Vaibhav can make.”
Dasgupta clarified he isn’t advocating for dropping anyone, but rather for assessing all viable combinations before the T20 World Cup. “Again, I'm not saying, please don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about dropping anyone here. I'm just saying, reiterating again, that the idea is that before the World Cup, you want to give every combination and every individual a proper chance and proper game time to understand what works,” he added.
