Cristiano Ronaldo has called for lifetime bans for fans who chanted the name of the late Diogo Jota during a Saudi Pro League match, targeting Al-Hilal midfielder Ruben Neves. The incident occurred during a match between Al-Hilal and Al-Taawoun, with supporters repeatedly shouting “Jota, Jota, Jota” in an attempt to disrupt Neves.
Neves, who was close friends with Jota and a pallbearer at his funeral, reacted to the chants by pointing to the sky and then to his eyes. After the 6-0 victory for Al-Hilal, Neves told reporters, “I hope they don't go to prayer later.” Ronaldo subsequently took to Instagram to condemn the behavior, stating, “The league must take action and punish this kind of fan behaviour. This is no longer football, and there have to be limits. People who behave like this should never be allowed to enter a stadium again.”
Diogo Jota tragically died in a car crash in July 2025, alongside his brother Andre Silva. Ronaldo paid tribute to Jota at the World Cup by wearing a Portugal shirt with Jota’s number 21. Neves has a tattoo commemorating Jota on his left calf, honoring their time together at both Portugal and Wolves.
