Michigan State defeated Eastern Michigan 35-7 on Saturday, September 12, at Spartan Stadium. Running back Cam Edwards led the Spartans’ ground game, finishing with 152 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.
MSU struggled in the first half, leading only 14-7 at halftime while being outgained and out-possessed by Eastern Michigan. The Spartans responded by running for 198 yards in the second half, contributing to a total of 258 rushing yards for the game. Edwards scored a 1-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter and a 2-yard touchdown in the third quarter. He also had a 40-yard gain after a fumble, setting up another touchdown.
Edwards admitted the fumble was unacceptable, stating, “I was beating myself up about it, but I think I did a really good way of responding for the team and just putting that play aside.” Coach Pat Fitzgerald added, “We didn't want his last touch to be what happened there.”
The Spartans utilized a “wildcat” formation with Edwards, a concept he jokingly suggested to coach Nick Sheridan, who then implemented it. Michigan State ran the ball 45 times compared to 26 passing plays. Through two games, Edwards has 250 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 48 carries.
Eastern Michigan coach Chris Creighton acknowledged Michigan State’s running style, saying, “I think what they want to be is downhill running, tough, physical…Big Ten, Michigan State football, right? And I think that you can see that just in the first two games.” Fitzgerald stated, “We took their best punch in the second quarter.”
