The Linux kernel has been patched to address a bug causing silent data loss in user space, which has been present since July 2023. The issue occurs when transparent hugepages (THP) are enabled and the system is under cgroup limits, leading to writes after a MADV_FREE call being lost.
The bug was reported earlier this month, along with a C program demonstrating the problem. Users of the Polars data analytics library have already experienced production data loss due to this kernel flaw. Triggering the bug requires a specific combination of transparent hugepage usage, MADV_FREE usage, and significant memory reclaim pressure.
The fix, merged as part of the x86/urgent merge, involved changing only one line of code. Developers have also marked the patch for backporting to currently supported stable kernel series. The bug was initially introduced in Linux kernel release 6.6.
