New patches to the Linux kernel, developed by LG’s Youngjun Park, aim to improve hibernation speed by optimizing image slot allocation and I/O processes. The changes focus on enabling contiguous memory runs for image writing and batching I/O operations.
Youngjun Park posted a request for comments (RFC) with a series of ten patches to the Linux kernel mailing list. According to Park, the patches “improve how hibernation allocates swap slots for its image,” noting that observations of the image writing process allow the allocator to provide contiguous runs, enabling batched image I/O and ultimately faster hibernation. Park also stated that the resulting I/O pattern is “friendly to flash device also.”
Preliminary testing conducted within a QEMU virtual machine showed a reduction in write times of 18~25% and read times of 11~20%. While the patches are still under development, initial results indicate promising performance gains for Linux hibernation. The initial patches are available for review on the Linux kernel mailing list.
