The third release candidate for Linux 7.3 is now available, bringing a substantial number of fixes and changes as the kernel progresses toward its stable release in October. Greg Kroah-Hartman previously forecasted a busy development cycle, and this release continues that trend.

Linus Torvalds announced the release of Linux 7.3-rc3, describing it as "Another fairly large rc release, and again one with a bigger filesystem footprint that we usually see." He noted that the changes primarily affect xfs, the smb client, netfs, afs, EROFS, and btrfs. While the patch is larger in terms of filesystem modifications, the bulk of the changes are related to drivers, specifically sound and networking, with some GPU driver updates.

Among the notable fixes is the disabling of LZ4 rolling decompression in EROFS due to potential data corruption issues that require further attention. The release also includes various core kernel and networking fixes, landlock improvements with selftests, and architecture-specific updates for s390 and powerpc. Many of the fixes were developed using AI/LLMs.
