BBC Studios Fiction has optioned Sarah Waters’ 2014 novel, ‘The Paying Guests,’ for a television series. Kayleigh Llewellyn, known for her work on ‘In My Skin’ and ‘Killing Eve,’ will adapt the book.

The novel, set in London in 1922, follows Frances Wray and her mother who take in lodgers, Lilian and Leonard Barber. The story centers on a clandestine love affair between Frances and Lilian, which then evolves into a crime thriller culminating in a murder and subsequent court case.

Sarah Waters’ works have been frequently adapted for screen, including ‘Tipping the Velvet,’ ‘Fingersmith,’ ‘Affinity,’ ‘The Night Watch,’ and ‘The Little Stranger.’ ‘Fingersmith’ also served as the inspiration for Park Chan-wook’s ‘The Handmaiden.’

‘The Paying Guests’ will be part of the BBC Studios Fiction slate, which also includes the third season of ‘Time,’ starring David Tennant and Siobhan Finneran. BBC Studios Fiction, led by Chief Creative Officer Josh Cole, was established last year and operates alongside BBC Studios Drama Productions.
