GNU Automake 1.19 was released today, marking the first new version in 15 months. The update includes a new feature, `AM_OPTIONAL_AUTOMAKE`, and addresses a 14-year-old bug, among other fixes.
The new `AM_OPTIONAL_AUTOMAKE` autoconf macro allows for conditional archive creation. It will build archives like `dist-xz`, `dist-zstd`, and `dist-bzip3` only if the necessary tools are available, skipping them without error if they are not.
Automake 1.19 now recognizes `COPYINGv2`, `COPYINGv3`, and similar files, treating them as equivalent to a conventional `COPYING` file for automatic inclusion in archives. This change aims to improve compatibility with other GNU projects, such as GNU GMP.
The release also resolves a long-standing bug where the `make dist-bzip2 dist-xz` command would fail because the uncompressed tarball was removed prematurely. The tarball is now properly shared for both archive creations. Additionally, Automake 1.19 improves detection of BusyBox’s Tar and ensures that `make dist` will fail logically if Tar itself fails, preventing the creation of truncated archives.
