GIMP 3.2.6, the latest version of the free and open-source image editor, is now available. This release focuses on early preparations for a future port to GTK4, alongside performance enhancements and new features.
GIMP developers have begun making changes to the codebase to avoid deprecated functionality and ensure compatibility with GTK4, which has been available for nearly six years. The transition from GTK3 to GTK4 is expected to be less extensive than the previous move from GTK2 to GTK3, but a “GIMP 4.0” release is still some time away.
Performance improvements in GIMP 3.2.6 center around font loading, addressing lag experienced when working with large font libraries, typing in the text tool, and closing font lists. Further speed optimizations are anticipated with the eventual GTK4 port.
New features include the ability to use the Cut function on layer groups and a new “Rotation” (Barrel Rotation) dynamic input for painting, compatible with newer Wacom pens. A macOS package is now generated concurrently with the Linux and Windows versions. The release also incorporates a number of security and general bug fixes.
