The Emmy Awards’ In Memoriam segment, which honors those in the television industry who have died, did not include several notable names this year, prompting discussion online. Despite a tribute to “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” earlier in the show, actor Nicholas Brendon was not featured in the segment. Other omissions included Chuck Norris, known for “Walker, Texas Ranger,” Patrick Muldoon of “Days of Our Lives” and “Starship Troopers,” Jaye P. Morgan, a panelist on “The Gong Show,” Daveigh Chase of “The Ring,” and Grizz Chapman, a performer on “30 Rock.”
The segment began with a tribute to Catherine O’Hara, hosted by her “Schitt’s Creek” co-stars Annie Murphy and Dan Levy, and “Home Alone” co-star Macaulay Culkin. Dolly Parton and Rob Reiner also received dedicated segments. More recent losses, including Tim Curry, Hayden Panettiere, and Bob Mackie, who died on the day of the ceremony, were also recognized. Noah Kahan performed “Bridge Over Troubled Water” during the presentation of names.
The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences explained that it is “just not possible to include everyone who died over the course of the past year,” particularly those whose careers were more focused on film or music than television. The Academy also prioritizes recognizing those who created and produced television programming, such as “Taxi” and “Cheers” director James Burrows and CNN founder Ted Turner. Fans who wish to see a more comprehensive list can find it on the TV Academy’s website.
