Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson threw an interception five plays into the 2026 NFL season during a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. The turnover occurred while the Browns were driving on the Jaguars’ 33-yard line.
Watson completed a 14-yard pass and a 9-yard pass on his first two throws. However, on his third pass attempt, Jaguars linebacker Foyesade Oluokun intercepted the ball and returned it to the Jaguars’ 41-yard line. Following the turnover, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence connected with Parker Washington for a 30-yard touchdown, giving Jacksonville an early lead.
The interception comes after a contentious offseason for Watson, who was booed by Browns fans during the preseason. Watson described the fan reaction as “disrespectful” in August, stating, “It’s a disrespectful thing…Last time I played on this field, I tore my Achilles. And that same fan base, they cheered when I got hurt. So what does that have to do with anything about performance when a person gets hurt, especially for your own city? And they cheer.” He later apologized for his remarks.
Former NFL head coach Rex Ryan, appearing on ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown,” suggested the Browns should have benched Watson, stating, “No way would I have started him. No way. In fact, I would have cut him…There's no more important thing than that fan base.” Shedeur Sanders is positioned as a potential replacement if Watson struggles.
