ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Houston Astros were swept in a three-game series by the Tampa Bay Rays, losing 14-4 on Sunday and falling to a 75-75 record. The defeat reduced their lead in the AL West to 1½ games over the Texas Rangers with 12 games remaining in the regular season.
The series began with two close contests, but an error by shortstop Jeremy Peña in the third inning of Sunday’s game triggered a Rays onslaught. A run scored on the play, and Richie Palacios followed with a home run off Hayden Wesneski, extending the Rays’ lead. Tampa Bay ultimately hit four home runs, including two-run shots from Nick Fortes and Jonathan Aranda, and amassed 15 hits.
Wesneski allowed three runs in the first inning and four unearned runs in the third. Manager Joe Espada began to empty his bench in the sixth inning, replacing Peña and Yordan Alvarez with pinch-hitters, and bringing in Christian Walker and Daulton Varsho on defense. Isaac Paredes hit a two-run home run in the sixth off Brady Hopkins, who was making his MLB debut.
The Astros managed only four hits, three of which were home runs – by Paredes, Nick Allen, and Nelson Velázquez – all after the game was out of reach. Ronel Blanco pitched the final 4⅓ innings to rest the bullpen. Houston’s recent series wins against the Yankees, White Sox, and Phillies had suggested they were contenders, but this weekend’s performance casts doubt on that assessment.
