The latest animated film featuring Tom and Jerry has been criticized for straying from the classic formula and becoming entangled in a convoluted plot. The film sees the iconic cat and mouse duo transported to a China-inspired setting and involved in a quest for a mysterious compass.
The new “Tom and Jerry” film, titled “Tom and Jerry: Forbidden Compass,” departs significantly from the duo’s traditional slapstick comedy. Instead of “triflingly menial disputes taken to absurd heights,” the film places Tom and Jerry on a quest for a “forbidden compass.” The film begins with Jerry arriving at a New York exhibition, “Traveling Exhibition of the Astral Compass – Journey to the Enigmatic East,” where Tom is a security guard. This initial chase sequence awakens the compass’s power, transporting them to ‘Golden City’ in China, modeled after the Forbidden City.
Once in Golden City, the classic Tom and Jerry dynamic largely disappears. The pair become secondary to a storyline involving Phoenix Master, his sidekick Feeny (described as a “thicc Big Bird with green hair coiffed à la Liberace”), and a villain named ‘Mega-Rat’ with his “evil henchrats.” The characters are tasked with finding the compass, with the assistance of anthropomorphic figures like ‘Sonny’ and ‘Xander.’
The film has been described as having an “alarming mental disconnect,” with the visuals being “ceaselessly incoherent,” combining Chinese traditional landscape painting with manga-like warfare and Hollywood-style gags. A scene depicts Chinese characters mistaking Tom and Jerry for deities and giving them a “sponsored-by-the-Tourism-Board visit,” reminiscent of “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.” The Chinese characters are animated in a style similar to Pixar, while the surrounding visuals contribute to the film’s chaotic nature.
