Nicholas Weinstock, executive producer of Apple TV+'s “Severance,” will produce the Indian fantasy-horror feature “Tongue,” starring Sayani Gupta. The film follows two estranged sisters searching for family secrets within a crumbling mansion.
Weinstock will produce through his Invention Studios, alongside Divya D’Souza, with Gupta also serving as an Indian producer through her banner, Sayani Gupta Movies. “Tongue” was selected for the South Asian Canadian Film Federation’s Indo-Canadian Producers’ Lab and will be showcased at the Toronto Film Festival’s Indo-Canadian co-production market.
The film centers on two sisters who, while locked inside their late grandmother’s mansion, hunt for clues connected to a mysterious language called the Tongue, encountering monstrous creatures and lethal traps along the way. Weinstock expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “I am enormously proud and excited about ‘Tongue’ and the chance to harness the talents of our fast-rising director Krishnarjun and the phenomenal Sayani.” He believes the film has the potential to be a global horror hit, noting that India has yet to produce a breakout international horror film comparable to titles like “Parasite,” “Get Out,” or “The Backrooms.”
Sayani Gupta is also debuting in a U.S. feature film, “Arya,” at the TIFF market. The film, directed by Neil Tuli, follows Arya Sinha, a piano instructor who takes a position in Minnesota. Gupta serves as an executive producer on “Arya,” alongside Ross Butler, Mark Evan Jackson, and Adi Roy. Gupta has a history with TIFF, with previous films “Margarita With a Straw,” “Parched,” and “The Hungry” premiering there in 2015, 2016, and 2017, respectively. Krishnarjun Bhattacharya, the director of “Tongue,” is a novelist and game designer, known for writing the “Tantric Trilogy” and co-writing the upcoming Netflix horror series “Vakr,” scheduled for release in 2026.
