The film ‘I Play Rocky,’ detailing Sylvester Stallone’s fight to create the 1976 film ‘Rocky,’ premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival Saturday night. The movie, directed by Peter Farrelly and starring Anthony Ippolito as Stallone, is considered a potential contender for TIFF’s People’s Choice Award.
The world premiere took place at the Princess of Wales Theatre as part of the festival’s Special Presentations program. The film recreates key moments from the original ‘Rocky,’ which became the highest-grossing movie of 1976 and received 10 Academy Award nominations, winning three including Best Picture.
Farrelly, screenwriter Peter Gamble, and actors Stephan James and Jay Duplass participated in a post-screening Q&A. Farrelly noted the film’s origin began with Gamble’s script. “I read this script and I thought it was the greatest script I’d ever read,” he said.
The director recounted discovering Anthony Ippolito after a casting agent sent him a self-tape. “I looked at it and the search was over,” Farrelly stated. “That’s the guy. We didn’t have to go any further.” Ippolito, 27, previously played George Wright in Netflix’s “Grand Army” and a young Al Pacino in Paramount+'s “The Offer.” This marks the second time he has portrayed a young Italian American icon connected to a Best Picture winner.
The film chronicles how Stallone, a struggling actor, convinced Hollywood to let him write and star in “Rocky” despite initial resistance. Studios offered money contingent on casting an established star, but Stallone insisted on playing the lead role himself, creating a standoff.
