The podcast “Ear Hustle,” created inside a prison, will be the subject of a documentary feature film. Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary will executive produce the project, which will follow the podcast’s creators as they expand their work internationally.
The documentary will focus on Bay Area visual artist Nigel Poor, and formerly incarcerated individuals Earlonne Woods and Antwan Williams, who launched “Ear Hustle” in 2017 while at San Quentin State Prison. The film, according to an official logline, will follow Poor, Woods, and Williams as they bring “Ear Hustle” to prisons around the world and explore the project’s evolution and impact.
Filmmaker Erika Cohn will direct and produce the documentary. She stated, “Nigel, Earlonne and Antwan have an extraordinary ability to find humor, intimacy and complexity in places audiences are rarely invited to see.” Cohn added, “For me, the film is an opportunity to turn the lens on the storytellers themselves, to explore the movement their work has inspired and how creating ‘Ear Hustle’ has impacted their own lives.”
“Ear Hustle” has been recognized for its unique approach to storytelling about incarceration, being named one of the 100 best podcasts of all time by IME. The documentary aims to showcase how the podcast has changed the way these stories are told and how it has transformed the lives of its creators. Executive producers also include Morgan Freeman, Lori McCreary (under her Revelations Entertainment banner), James Younger, Insiyah Haveliwala, and Patty Quillin. Cohn will produce alongside Jaz Kealoha Berger and Rajal Pitroda. The podcast is part of the Radiotopia podcast network, powered by public media organization PRX.
