The second season of “Diarra From Detroit,” created by and starring Diarra Kilpatrick, recently concluded streaming on Paramount+. The show faced a two-year hiatus and a network transition from BET+ following a merger. Kilpatrick discussed the challenges of creating a Black-led series in a climate where such projects are increasingly rare.
Kilpatrick noted a trend of Black-led series, including Natasha Rothwell’s “How to Die Alone,” Issa Rae’s “Rap Sh*t,” and NBC’s “Found,” being canceled amidst corporate mergers and a “hostile” political environment regarding diversity. Despite these challenges, Paramount+ renewed interest in “Diarra From Detroit” after the shuttering of BET+. Season two follows Diarra as she launches her P.I. business, investigating the disappearance of Chris’s (Shannon Wallace) uncle’s armoire – which turns out to be a desk – and navigating personal relationships with friends Tea (Bryan Terell Clark) and Aja (Dominique Perry) against the backdrop of a Detroit summer.
Kilpatrick expressed frustration with the lack of respect often shown to work centered on Black women. “It pisses me off when work that has a Black woman at the center of it doesn’t respect the audience,” she told Variety. “Do you respect the audience? Did you like this woman? I don’t want Black female work to be synonymous with low craftsmanship or low budgets or bad lighting. I want us to be honored.” She contrasted the show’s production scale with those of series like “Furious” and “Lioness,” questioning why “Diarra From Detroit” isn’t a “household name” despite its quality.
Kilpatrick feels the show is “one of the last people standing” as niche storytelling opportunities diminish. She hopes for a Season 3.
