The animated series ‘American Dad’ is celebrating its 400th episode on September 13th, a milestone its producers find surprising given the show’s journey across networks. The series, created by Seth MacFarlane, originally aired on Fox, moved to TBS, and has now returned to Fox with a four-season order.
Executive producer and co-creator Matt Weitzman expressed amazement at the show’s longevity, stating, “The show really doesn’t want to die.” He added that continuation depends on continued viewership and Seth MacFarlane’s willingness to participate. The show centers around Stan Smith, a CIA agent voiced by MacFarlane, and his family in Langley Falls, Virginia, including his wife Francine (Wendy Schaal), son Steve (Scott Grimes), daughter Hayley (Rachael MacFarlane), and her husband Jeff (Jeff Fischer). The Smith household also includes the alien Roger, also voiced by MacFarlane, and Klaus, a talking goldfish voiced by Dee Bradley Baker.
Initially conceived as a political satire, ‘American Dad’ shifted its focus to family-based storylines. Weitzman explained, “The show has evolved because it had to,” noting that the fast-paced news cycle made sustained political commentary difficult. The show also frequently experiments with different genres, such as space opera and Westerns, offering a varied viewing experience. “I think what’s been become weirdly special about the show is that we do a lot of different kinds of shows,” Weitzman said. “There are pure comedy shows, and then there are the weird, esoteric episodes that are unlike anything else.”
After being canceled by Fox in 2013, ‘American Dad’ found a home on TBS for ten seasons, where it enjoyed greater creative freedom due to fewer FCC content restrictions. “The show got to do more, be more provocative, do things that we weren’t able to do on Fox,” Weitzman noted. When TBS largely exited original series production in 2025, Fox revived the show with a four-season order, a development that surprised Weitzman. Fellow executive producer Brian Boyle was more confident in the show's return.
