Violet Grohl performed a stripped-down acoustic cover of The Cure’s “High” for Triple J’s Like a Version series. She also performed her own song, “595,” from her debut album, *Be Sweet to Me*, released May 29 via Auroura and Republic Records.
Grohl described her cover of “High” as aiming to capture a “teenage crush kind of feeling,” and stated, “I love the childlike joy of the lyrics… it’s such a cute love song.” She noted the song has been a personal favorite for years, tracing her fandom for The Cure back to when she was 12 or 13 years old after hearing “Friday I’m in Love.” She described “High” as “a perfect example of their sound during the early ’90s” and praised “all the imagery in the lyricism.” Grohl expressed hope that Robert Smith would approve of her rendition, saying, “I adore Robert Smith… I would hope that they would at least think it was okay.”
The album *Be Sweet to Me* was recorded across 2024 and 2025 and draws inspiration from alternative rock of the late ’80s and early ’90s, citing The Cure, Cocteau Twins, the Pixies, Soundgarden and the Breeders as influences. Grohl stated, “There’s something so powerful about that period of music, from the messaging to the visuals… It’s authentic and raw.”
Violet Grohl, the eldest daughter of Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, has been building her solo career alongside her family’s musical endeavors. She has contributed backing vocals to Foo Fighters tracks, including “Show Me How,” which reached No. 21 on Hot Hard Rock Songs in 2023. She also performed at the 2022 tribute concerts for Taylor Hawkins. In 2021, she and her father covered X’s “Nausea,” performing it on Jimmy Kimmel Live! with Krist Novoselic, Dave Lombardo and Greg Kurstin. Her first billed solo TV performance was in June on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, performing “Bug in the Cake.” Grohl made her Billboard chart debut earlier this year with “THUM” reaching No. 38 on the Adult Alternative Airplay chart. She is scheduled to perform at several U.S. festivals this fall, including Riot Fest, Shaky Knees, CBGB Festival, All Things Go D.C. and Corona Capital, followed by a headlining U.S. tour and supporting Beabadoobee on her European tour.
