Ayo Edebiri, Lily-Rose Depp, Michelle Yeoh, and Courteney Cox were among the attendees at Variety and Chanel’s annual Women in Film dinner held during the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday night. The event celebrated the achievements of women and nonbinary filmmakers.

Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh was greeted with hugs from Emmy winners Sarah Paulson and Colman Domingo upon arrival. Patricia Arquette also joined Yeoh for a photograph. The gathering included Chanel ambassadors Ayo Edebiri and Lily-Rose Depp, as well as Noomi Rapace, Luke Evans, David Harbour, India Amarteifio, Rosalind Eleazar, Cole Sprouse, Amber Mudthunder, Jessica Henwick, Charlie Heaton, Anthony Ippolito, Cooper Raiff, Mariana di Girolamo, Emanuela Postacchini, and Mackenzie Davis.

Variety co-president and co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh highlighted Variety’s commitment to covering parity in the entertainment industry and the importance of female representation. He noted that despite progress, none of the top 15 films at the box office were solely directed by women. “That’s why this dinner is so important. It’s an opportunity for you all to network, to come together, to brainstorm,” Setoodeh said, encouraging connections between filmmakers and executives.

Variety co-president and publisher Dea Lawrence quoted Gloria Steinem, stating, “Representation is not just who gets to appear in the story. It’s about who gets to tell the story.” She emphasized the importance of celebrating women who are creating, directing, writing, producing, and leading in the film industry.

This year’s TIFF lineup includes 35% of official selections directed or co-directed by women, such as Rachel Morrison’s “Love of Your Life” and Beth de Araújo’s “Josephine.” TIFF leadership had set a goal of reaching this figure by 2028, achieving it two years ahead of schedule. Jennifer Frees, TIFF’s Chief Business and Marketing Officer, attributed this success to organizations like Chanel and publications like Variety holding Hollywood accountable.
