Josh Giuliano’s slasher film “River,” starring Jane Levy, Jessica Rothe, and Max Mattern, has been acquired by Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Atomic Monster for a deal exceeding $10 million. The acquisition occurred following the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The deal, confirmed by Variety, involves distribution rights for the debut feature from Giuliano, who wrote and directed the film. “River” originally had backing from Independent Film Company and Shudder, but those companies are now selling the rights. The film centers on estranged siblings who reunite after their father’s death and embark on a river trip that turns into a nightmare when their boat breaks down. Dane DiLiegro also stars.
The film is produced by Nick Antosca, Alex Hedlund, and Steven Schneider, with Roy Lee, Ben Ross, Matt Brodlie, Jonathan Kier, Jeffrey Tinnell, Robert Tinnell, and Jason Blum serving as executive producers. Sam Zimmerman, currently leading the indies slate at Blumhouse Atomic Monster, previously worked with Giuliano during his time at Shudder. Blumhouse Atomic Monster, Divie/Conquer, and Spooky Pictures recently signed on for Giuliano’s next film, “Occupant.”
Giuliano, an American Film Institute directing program alumnus, has received awards for his short films at genre festivals including Fantasia, Fantastic Fest, and FrightFest. He is represented by CAA, Kaplan Perrone Entertainment, and Marios Rush.
