President Donald Trump questioned the Dallas Mavericks' decision to trade Luka Dončić during a speech at the GOP midterm convention Wednesday night in Dallas. Speaking at the American Airlines Center, Trump expressed his confusion over the 2025 trade that sent Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers, suggesting a potential redo of the deal.
Trump criticized Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico and endorsed Republican nominee Ken Paxton during his address. However, he paused to address the trade, stating, “I must tell you, I don't understand the trade. Was it Luka? Maybe we can redo that trade? I redo deals all the time.”
The Mavericks received Max Christie and Anthony Davis in the trade, a return Trump characterized as insufficient. He acknowledged that, unlike business and politics, trades in sports are final. Chron was unable to reach the Mavericks for comment as of Thursday morning.
Trump previously owned the New Jersey Generals of the USFL from 1983-1985 and attempted to purchase the Buffalo Bills in 2014. He has also advocated for the Hall of Fame induction of Roger Clemens and Pete Rose. His questioning of the Dončić trade resonated with fans in North Texas and across the United States.
