Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2026 will showcase a diverse range of international films, including new works from established and emerging filmmakers. Several U.K. titles featuring prominent actors will premiere, alongside films from India, Ireland, Brazil, and Japan.

Among the U.K. selections are films starring Helen Mirren, Laura Linney, Rhys Ifans, Erin Doherty, and James McAvoy. Jodie Comer stars in the gothic rom-com “Stuffed,” described as a film where romance takes unpredictable turns. The Platform selection includes Gabriel Martins’ “On Behalf of My Son,” which Variety notes is a leading international hope for a Brazilian director.

David Turpin’s “Ancestors,” featuring Éanna Hardwicke, Jack Wolfe, Jessica Reynolds, Rupert Everett and Christina Hendricks, will explore the emotional landscape following the AIDS crisis in 1980s London. Turpin stated, “Often when there is an event like this, our instinct is not to look back at it, then sort of not to be aware of the ways in which it’s continuing to haunt us.” The film is sold by Mister Smith Entertainment.

From India, Theja Rio’s debut feature “Angh” centers on a Nagaland chief in the 1960s, cast with locals who had never acted before and shot on 16mm film. It is the only Indian film in the Platform lineup, with the winner potentially entering the Oscars international feature race. Takashi Miike’s “Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo” is a U.S., U.K., Japan, and France co-production.

Variety selected these 20 films from a larger pool of international movies at TIFF, stating they would rather be accused of bad mathematics than bad taste. The selection includes 42% of films directed by women.
