Sumerian Pictures has acquired the North American rights to the Norwegian film “Low Expectations,” marking writer-director Eivind Landsvik’s feature debut. The film stars Marie Ulven, also known as the musician Girl in Red, and Anders Danielsen Lie.
The acquisition follows a successful international sales run, with distribution secured in over 30 countries. Sumerian Pictures plans a theatrical release in 2027. The film centers on Maja (Ulven), a rising pop star struggling to balance her success with her personal life. She leaves her career and takes a job at a high school, working with Johannes (Danielsen Lie), and begins to reconnect with herself.
Rob Williams, president of Sumerian Pictures, stated, “‘Low Expectations’ is a beautifully rendered take on the challenges of stardom and young adulthood. Eivind Landsvik is a director to watch, bringing a fresh and distinctive voice to the screen, and Marie Ulven and the entire cast are spectacular.” Paul Jullien, head of sales at Salaud Morisset, said, “We’re thrilled to be working with Sumerian Pictures. Their deep understanding of music and film audiences makes them an ideal partner for ‘Low Expectations,’ and we believe they are uniquely positioned to bring the film to a wide North American audience.”
Landsvik expressed his excitement about the partnership, saying, “It’s a fantastic next step to team up with Sumerian for the North American release of ‘Low Expectations.’ I can’t wait to share the film with North American filmgoers.” The film is produced by Lotte Sandbu and Synnøve Hørsdal for Maipo Film, in co-production with Snowglobe, and received support from the Norwegian Film Institute, Oslo Filmfond, the Danish Film Institute, Nordisk Film & TV Fond and Eurimages. “Low Expectations” will open theatrically in Norway on September 11.
