Shotwell 33, the first stable version of the photo manager for GNOME desktops to utilize GTK4, has been released after a development process beginning in 2025. This marks the first major toolkit update for the image tool since its transition to GTK3 in 2012 (version 0.12.0).
While the update is primarily a port to the new toolkit rather than a visual overhaul—unlike gThumb’s GTK4/libadwaita port—developers state the change focuses on underlying technologies and ensuring compatibility with modern GNOME desktops. A more substantial visual revamp using GTK4/libadwaita may follow at a later date.
Beyond the GTK4 port, Shotwell 33 includes improvements to printing functionality, patches for memory leaks, code cleanup, and fixes for various bugs affecting toolbars, dialog spacing, and face detection. Shotwell has been the default photo manager and image editor for Ubuntu’s live image and extended installs since Ubuntu 10.10.
Users can expect to find the update on the Flathub or Snap Store soon.
