KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs played to a 9-9 tie Friday night in a preseason game featuring rookie third-string quarterbacks. Jason Myers of the Seahawks missed a 52-yard field goal attempt as time expired.
The Chiefs have now gone three straight preseasons without a win, scoring only one touchdown in exhibition play. Seattle’s Jalen Milroe completed 16 of 26 passes for 223 yards and a touchdown, while Kansas City’s Garrett Nussmeier was 22 of 34 for 198 yards with one interception. Neither team utilized their starting quarterbacks in the preseason game; Sam Darnold was a healthy scratch for Seattle, and Patrick Mahomes is recovering from surgery on his left knee sustained last December.
The Seahawks took an early lead with a 46-yard field goal by Myers midway through the first quarter. The Chiefs responded with a 28-yard field goal from Harrison Butker. Kansas City’s drive was aided by a 57-yard kickoff return by Brashard Smith, but stalled due to a holding penalty in the Seattle red zone. They later achieved a first-and-goal but were unable to convert, settling for a 24-yard field goal by Butker, giving them a 6-3 lead. Butker also missed a 58-yard field goal attempt in the third quarter.
Seattle regained the lead on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Milroe to Nick Vannett, though Myers missed the ensuing extra point. The Chiefs tied the game at 9-9 with Butker’s third field goal, a 19-yard attempt. Smith was unable to gain yardage on three carries after the Chiefs reached the Seattle 4-yard line. Chiefs cornerback Melvin Smith suffered a rib injury in the first quarter and did not return to the game.
The Seahawks will open the regular season at home on Sept. 9 in a Super Bowl rematch against New England. The Chiefs will host Denver on Monday, Sept. 14.
