Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher and designated hitter Shohei Ohtani’s pitching return is in question after a recent setback, though he is expected to remain available as a designated hitter. Manager Dave Roberts is evaluating whether to shut Ohtani down from pitching altogether.
Ohtani’s pitching progression halted on August 29th after he threw a 20-pitch bullpen session. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced that Ohtani would not be returning to pitch as initially anticipated. As of September 2nd, the team is still considering shutting him down, but has not made a final decision. “I know he is in lockstep with (Mark Prior), the pitching guys, the training staff, but I think for me he has to throw a bullpen, then we will see the next progression,” Roberts said.
Ohtani has not pitched in a game since July 3rd due to knee inflammation and biceps discomfort. He did not pitch at all during his first season with the Dodgers while recovering from right elbow surgery. Roberts stated that having Ohtani play in the outfield is “not on the table.” Despite the pitching uncertainty, Ohtani is still expected to be available as a designated hitter as the Dodgers pursue a third consecutive World Series title.
