Nintendo announced a new 2D installment in the *Metroid* series, titled *Metroid Ravenous*, for the Switch 2. The game is scheduled to launch on January 28th, 2027.
The new game appears to be an evolution of *Metroid Dread*, featuring 3D graphics alongside 2D gameplay. Players can expect cinematic action sequences, parrying, and the return of Samus’s Morph Ball ability. A new mechanic allows Samus to absorb energy from enemies, described by Nintendo as “eat or be eaten.”
*Metroid Ravenous* will introduce a variety of enemies, including large creatures and futuristic fighters wielding blades and spinning metal hats. This release continues the recent revitalization of the *Metroid* series, following the 2021 launch of *Dread*, a 2023 remaster of *Metroid Prime* for the original Switch, and *Metroid Prime 4* released last year.
