International sales agency MoreThan Films has acquired the rights to “Sunburn,” directed by Serville Poblete, before its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film, set during a blackout in Toronto’s St. James Town neighborhood, follows a group of young people as they navigate a pivotal moment in their lives.
The film stars Joshua Obra, Dashawn Blackwood, Arianna Shannon, and Milan Deng. According to MoreThan Films co-founder Lidia Damatto, “Serville Poblete is one of the most exciting emerging voices in Canadian cinema today.” Damatto praised Poblete’s “distinctive aesthetic and his ability to transform a single summer day into a rich portrait of a community rarely represented on screen.” She described “Sunburn” as “a deeply authentic and vibrant mosaic of coming-of-age stories” that captures the “energy, humor, and uncertainty of youth.”
Poblete, a Filipino-Canadian screenwriter and film director from Toronto, previously directed the short documentary “King’s Court,” which received a Canadian Screen Award nomination, and the short film “In the Morning Sun,” which won the Grand Jury Prize at SXSW and is eligible for Academy Award consideration. He was also selected for TIFF Next Wave this year. Poblete stated, “Making a movie about my neighbourhood with so many amazing collaborators felt like summer camp. We had so much fun making it.” He expressed excitement about partnering with MoreThanFilms and Gersh to share the film, saying, “It’s something I feel the world needs right now.”
“Sunburn” is executive produced by Neil Champagne, Ryan Bobkin, Veronica Diaferia, and Sara Eolin, with cinematography by Christian Bielz. The film is featured in Variety’s TIFF 2026: 20 International Titles to Track selection. Julien Levesque from Gersh will handle domestic sales.
