Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood is under pressure after a difficult start to the season, despite a game-winning Hail Mary pass against Western Michigan. Head coach Kyle Whittingham has indicated Underwood’s starting position is not secure.
Underwood completed 12 of 22 passes for 170 yards with one interception in the season opener. While the team started strong with a 75-yard drive, the offense struggled afterward. According to Pete Nakos of On3, sources indicated Underwood had a strong finish to fall camp, but that performance didn’t translate to the game.
Nakos wrote that Underwood “had a strong end of fall camp, putting together some of his best practices yet as a Wolverine.” The 19-year-old quarterback is adjusting to a new offensive coordinator, Jason Beck, and is working to build confidence in the new system.
Whittingham stated earlier this week that Underwood's job security “is not infinite. At some point, we've got to turn a corner.” He also announced that true freshman Tommy Carr will serve as Underwood’s backup. Underwood will have another opportunity to prove himself on Saturday when Michigan hosts number 11 Oklahoma.
