Inter Milan is experiencing growing concerns regarding goalkeeper Josep Martinez following high-profile errors in recent matches against Real Madrid and Udinese. Despite a 5-3 victory over Udinese on Monday evening, Martinez’s mistakes have raised questions about his position as the team’s starting goalkeeper.
Martinez, who joined Inter from Genoa in 2024, spent the previous two seasons as an understudy to Yann Sommer. The club considered signing Guglielmo Vicario or Emiliano Martinez during the summer transfer window but ultimately decided to promote Martinez to the starting role and instead signed Ivan Provedel as a low-cost backup.
During Inter’s Champions League match against Real Madrid last week, Martinez was easily dispossessed in his own six-yard box, leading to a goal by Federico Valverde and putting Madrid ahead 2-0. The error occurred after a routine pass from Alessandro Bastoni, which Martinez hesitated over, allowing Valverde to poke the ball into the net.
In Monday’s Serie A match against Udinese, Martinez was again at fault for a goal. Keinan Davis outmuscled Andy Diouf, playing a low cross into the box that was deflected past a poorly-positioned Martinez by Jurgen Ekkelenkamp.
La Gazzetta dello Sport has questioned whether Inter should replace Martinez with the more experienced Provedel, who is now seeking an opportunity to become the starting goalkeeper.
