The Great North Run, celebrating its 45th anniversary, will take place on Sunday, September 13th, with a record 63,000 participants. The half marathon will run from Newcastle to South Shields, featuring elite and mass races.

The race schedule begins at 10:20am BST with the elite wheelchair race, followed by the elite women’s race at 10:25am and the visually impaired participants at 10:27am. The elite men’s and mass races will start at 10:50am. Coverage will be available on BBC One starting at 10:00am BST, and for license fee payers via the iPlayer app and website.

The route begins in Newcastle on the A167 near Claremont Road, crossing the River Tyne to Gateshead and finishing in South Shields after a mile-long stretch along the seafront. Miles 8-12 are noted as the most challenging part of the course due to uphill terrain.

Returning champions Alex Mutiso of Kenya and Sheila Chepkirui will compete in the elite men’s and women’s fields, respectively. Great Britain’s Eilish McColgan will also participate, returning to the race after being ruled out of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow due to a foot injury.

The full list of elite men competing includes Casey Clinger (USA), Abdi Nageeye (The Netherlands), Clayton Young (USA), Ben Connor (Great Britain & NI), Deresa Geleta (Ethiopia), and many more international and British athletes. The elite women’s field includes Sheila Chepkirui (Kenya).
