GNU Coreutils 9.12 was released today, bringing performance optimizations and new features to the widely-used set of core system utilities. The update addresses a long-standing bug affecting recursive operations and introduces enhancements to several commands.
The new release resolves an issue where commands like `chcon`, `chgrp`, `chmod`, `chown`, `du`, and `ls` would fail when traversing directories recursively with the `-R` option if files were removed concurrently. The `stat` and `tail` commands now support the FailFS and NULLFS file-system types.
The `uname` command gains `-A` and `--all-labeled` options, designed to label all output and display one item per line. Performance improvements are also included, with `cut -w` now operating with up to four times the throughput for typical inputs. `uniq -c` sees a speed increase of up to 2.5x on systems with unlocked stdio functions, and the `sort` command is optimized to better utilize available memory and parallel processing when handling inputs of unknown size, such as pipes.
Commands `cp`, `install`, and `mv` will now revert to a standard copy operation if a `--reflink=auto` attempt fails, such as when metadata space is exhausted on XFS. The `mv` command will also issue a warning if copying extended attributes fails, indicating potential file-system incompatibility. Other fixes include preventing a buffer over-read in `factor` and addressing Solaris-specific bugs. GNU Coreutils 9.12 is available for download at GNU.org.
