Gladys Knight to Scale Back Performances

R&B icon Gladys Knight, 82, has announced she will be reducing her performance schedule to focus on other priorities. The decision comes after reports of difficulties during recent shows, including instances where she handed off lead vocals to backup singers mid-performance.

Knight revealed her plans in an Instagram post on Thursday, stating she is “easing into fewer performances while focusing on transitioning into the next stage of my career and life moving forward.” She intends to spend more time with her husband and grandchildren.

Recent performances have raised concerns among fans and family. During a July 25 show at the Hollywood Bowl, Knight began to walk offstage during “Midnight Train to Georgia,” passing the lead to her backup singers, according to Billboard. Her husband, William McDowell, told TMZ that while Knight wants to continue performing, her energy levels vary. “No one is ever gonna make me say, ‘My wife is well,’ but all she wants to do is sing,” he said.

Knight’s son, Shanga Hankerson, has voiced concerns about his mother’s well-being, suggesting in 2025 and 2016 that she may be suffering from dementia. “I don’t want my mom out on tour, on a tour bus, wondering where she’s at,” he told Good Morning America. McDowell stated that Knight has not yet been diagnosed with dementia but will be undergoing an evaluation with a doctor.

Despite these concerns, Knight assured fans in her social media statement that this is not a complete retirement. “I hope to see your smiling faces out and about and on the road. God bless all of you and hope to see you soon,” she wrote.
