The San Francisco Giants completed a three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday with a 7-6 victory fueled by a sixth-inning rally led by several rookies at Oracle Park.
The Giants, who have the second-youngest roster in the majors with an average age of 26.4, trailed by five runs before a two-out rally in the eighth inning. Drew Cavanaugh started the comeback with a base hit, followed by a two-run single from Bryce Eldridge and an RBI single by Jonah Cox. Jung Hoo Lee then hit a two-run double, tying the game, and Shay Whitcomb drove in the go-ahead run with a double. Trent Harris secured his first big-league save, becoming the 12th Giants pitcher to record a save this season.
Despite the win, the Giants’ youth has been apparent, as the team leads the majors in errors with eight in nine games. Rookie starter Blade Tidwell gave up a three-run homer after obstructing a baserunner, and rookies Cox and Cavanaugh both committed errors. Manager Tony Vitello acknowledged that such mistakes are to be expected with a young team.
The Giants have used 66 players this season, tying a franchise record set in 2022 under president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi. Philip Abner and Brett Harris both made their Giants debuts in the game, having been acquired on waivers last month and last week, respectively. Vitello is anticipating a homecoming when the Giants travel to St. Louis on Monday, where his father, Greg Vitello, is a Missouri Hall of Fame coach. Vitello expressed excitement for St. Louis cuisine, specifically custard, Italian food, and toasted ravioli, stating, “It doesn't matter,” when asked if toasted ravioli fit into the Italian food category. He described himself as a “massive fan” of the dish.
