Daisy Ackerman and Ellie-Mai Sanford, former players in the Women’s Super League (WSL) academies, are hoping to lead Gwalia United to promotion in the English football league system. Both players came through Bristol City’s academy, with Ackerman later joining Arsenal and Sanford playing college football in the United States.
Gwalia United has started its season unbeaten, drawing 1-1 against Cheltenham in the League Cup on Thursday thanks to a goal from Molly Kehoe. Sanford, 24, who also represented Wales at the youth level, expressed her desire to earn a senior international call-up, stating, “I’d take it any day, it would mean a lot.” She spent time on a football scholarship in Texas, playing for San Antonio while studying, describing the experience as “amazing.” Her current focus is on securing promotion for Gwalia, aiming to return the club to tier three, “where we should be.”
Joining Sanford is Bristol-born Daisy Ackerman, 23, who progressed through Arsenal’s academy. Ackerman played in a 2021 match against Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium, alongside players like Jordan Nobbs, Katie McCabe and Frida Maanum. She described playing with them as “absolutely insane,” and praised the lessons she learned. Before joining Gwalia in 2025, Ackerman also played for Bristol Rovers, Cheltenham Town and Oxford United. She is currently injured but hopes to contribute to Gwalia’s promotion push with her experience.
Sanford and Ackerman are reunited in south Wales, hoping to catalyse Gwalia’s return to National League South Division.
