Rafael Devers will undergo core muscle surgery, ending his season with the Giants. Kyle Bradish is also likely done for the year due to an abdominal injury, while Esmerlyn Valdez is out with a hamstring strain. Dansby Swanson is expected to return Friday after a rehab assignment.
Rafael Devers’ season came to an end Sunday after being placed on the 60-day injured list with a core muscle injury. The 29-year-old first baseman was one of the hottest hitters in baseball this month, batting .342 with seven home runs. He was three home runs shy of 40, and would have been the first Giants player to hit 40 homers since Barry Bonds in 2004. According to reports, Devers had been playing through the injury for some time. He is expected to be recovered and ready for spring training.
Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Kyle Bradish’s season is also over. He was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday with lower abdominal discomfort, a day after allowing five runs over three innings against the Blue Jays. The 30-year-old right-hander posted a 4.12 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, and a career-low 21.2% strikeout rate this season.
Esmerlyn Valdez suffered a left hamstring strain Friday against the Cubs and was placed on the 10-day injured list. The 22-year-old outfielder had a strong first half, hitting .309 with ten home runs, but struggled after the All-Star break, batting just .184 with seven home runs. His injury coincides with the activation of Ryan O’Hearn, who will now fill in at designated hitter.
Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday. Manager Craig Counsell stated the team plans to activate him from the 10-day injured list on Friday.
