Google has transitioned Chrome to a two-week release cycle, a change from its previous four-week schedule. This adjustment, launched with Chrome 153 on desktop, iOS, and Android, is directly linked to the evolving security landscape in the age of artificial intelligence.
Google explained that the increase in security patches and updates, driven by automated AI tools and community bug reports, necessitates a faster release cadence. A shorter cycle helps manage security fixes and reduce the “N-day” patch gap – the time between vulnerability discovery and patch deployment. The company notes that faster-moving threats, some originating from AI, can be addressed more effectively with quicker updates.
Beyond security, the accelerated schedule also facilitates faster feature deployment. This is particularly important as AI-assisted software development fosters new browser competition, including alternatives like Brave, Dia, Opera Neon, Perplexity’s Comet, and DuckDuckGo’s browser. Google is also actively integrating AI features into Chrome and requires rapid iteration.
The move is expected to influence the broader web industry, with Mozilla, Microsoft, and Brave already adopting similar two-week release schedules. Chrome previously adjusted its release cycle to four weeks in 2021, moving from a six-week schedule, building on a decade of “release early, release often” principles.
