Apple on Wednesday unveiled the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 at an event in Cupertino, California. The new smartwatches feature upgraded health-sensing systems and “Audio Intelligence” features designed to enhance daily life and provide users with more detailed health data.
The new “Audio Intelligence” features include “Live Rewind,” which allows users to rewind up to 15 seconds of a conversation by double-pressing the Digital Crown, displaying a text snippet. Users can then ask Siri about the content or save it to the new Siri app. Apple also introduced “Siri Recap,” which uses ambient listening to generate titles and key points from conversations, such as meetings or conferences, and stores them in the Siri app.
Apple emphasized that these audio intelligence features “do not create or store audio recordings.” A new “Sound Recognition” feature will alert users to sounds like sirens, alarms, doorbells, and a baby crying, intended for those who are hard of hearing.
The smartwatches also boast an improved health-sensing system with a larger electrode surface area for ECG readings and redesigned photodiodes for more efficient light capture. Green LEDs have been made more power-efficient for accurate heart-rate measurements, with background readings now taken every five seconds – a 60-fold increase in frequency. New readiness scores analyze recent activity, vitals, and sleep to indicate how prepared a user’s body is for the day. A “Health Age” feature compares key health metrics to a user’s actual age, using data like VO2 max and sleep patterns.
The Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399, while the Apple Watch Ultra 4 costs $499.
