Apple unveiled the AirPods 5, an update to the AirPods 4 series, at its September event. John Ternus, Apple’s new CEO, announced the new earbuds feature “best-in-class open-ear active noise cancellation” and a redesigned acoustic architecture.
The AirPods 5 offer 50 percent better noise reduction compared to the AirPods 4, along with improved sound quality. A new model includes on-stem control, allowing users to adjust volume by swiping up and down – a first for Apple’s open-ear design. Battery life has also been extended to up to five hours of playback with ANC enabled, an increase of one hour over the AirPods 4.
The base model AirPods 5 are available for preorder today for $129, while the AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case are priced at $149, which is $30 less than the previous generation. Both models will be available starting September 18th. The AirPods 4 series introduced Apple’s open-ear wireless earbuds with and without active noise cancellation, both featuring the H2 chip, pinch controls, and identical sound. The AirPods 4 with ANC were noted for their effective handling of ambient noise despite their open-ear design.
