Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson co-star in “Runner,” an action thriller recently released by Angel Studios. The film follows Hank Malone, a courier and recovering alcoholic, played by Ritchson, who becomes embroiled in a high-stakes chase after agreeing to transport a donated liver.
Wilson portrays Ben Bishop, a chatty messenger who insists on accompanying Hank to deliver the organ to Kate, the mother of Ellie, a sick girl awaiting the transplant. The pair quickly discover they are being pursued by Damian Zaldívar, played by Rodrigo Santoro, the ruthless son of a drug lord, Cecilia Toussaint, who also requires the liver for his own survival. Zaldívar has been instructed to eliminate anyone obstructing his access to the organ.
According to a review, the 98-minute film is “entertaining” despite not being “polished enough to hold up against proper studio fare.” The reviewer notes that Ritchson, who also co-produced the film, is on the cusp of stardom and compares “Runner” to Dwayne Johnson’s 2003 film, “The Rundown,” noting that both characters initially attempt to avoid violence. The film is set in Brisbane, Australia and on the Gold Coast.
