Filmmaker Zack Snyder is responding to online backlash surrounding his new film, “The Last Photograph,” and addressing accusations of holding extremist views. He also discussed the long journey to completing the project and his previous work on the DC superhero universe.
Snyder’s new action-thriller, produced by his wife Deborah, follows a former DEA operative, Stuart Martin (described as a dead ringer for Hugh Jackman), as he searches for his missing niece and nephew in an unnamed South American country. The operative is joined by a heroin-shooting war photographer, Fra Fee, who witnessed the parents’ murder. Snyder has been planning the film since the early 2000s, with Christian Bale and Sean Penn previously attached to star.
The film was shot in 32 days, primarily in Colombia, during which Snyder contracted COVID-19 and worked with a 100-degree fever. Despite the challenges, “The Last Photograph” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, but has received negative reactions online. Snyder acknowledged the charged discourse surrounding his films, stating this time feels different.
Addressing accusations of being a fascist, Snyder stated, “I made the gayest movie ever made.” He also explained the film’s origins, noting it began development before “300.” He and his wife had a window in their schedule after considering another project, “Illusions,” based on a Richard Bach book, and decided to move forward with “The Last Photograph.”
Snyder also alluded to personal tragedy informing the film, referencing the death of his daughter, Autumn, in 2017. He and Deborah left “Justice League” post-production to grieve, after which Joss Whedon took over and made significant changes, leading to allegations of misconduct. This prompted fans to demand the “Snyder Cut,” which was ultimately released.
