The X.Org Server 26.1 release is approaching, marking the first major update since October 2021. Alan Coopersmith of Oracle initially projected a new release in 2026, a goal that now appears likely to be met.
The second release candidate, X.Org Server 26.1 RC2, was released this week, following RC1 released last month. This candidate includes fixes for XKB, X Input, and other areas, alongside updates to the Meson build system. A comprehensive list of changes can be found in the xorg-server 26.0.99.902 announcement.
Notably, the update bumps the Application Binary Interface (ABI) for both extension and video driver versions. This change is intended to benefit the NVIDIA packaged driver and other parties that rely on specific ABI versions. Simultaneously, XWayland 26.1 RC2 was also released yesterday.
