Wyoming football player Jayden Williams appears to have pushed at least one fan following Colorado State’s 35-13 victory on September 5. Wyoming coach Jay Sawvel addressed the incident, stating it “has been addressed” and will be discussed team-wide.
Videos circulating on social media show defensive lineman Jayden Williams pushing a fan as Colorado State fans rushed the field after securing the Bronze Boot trophy. Sawvel, in his September 7 press conference, confirmed he had reviewed the footage. “I've seen the Jayden video, been made aware of it. Made aware of it first, watched it a couple different times. It's been addressed and will be addressed further in house. Obviously, we don't condone that from players to fans or anything from that standpoint. That will be something we address team wide,” he said, according to KGWN TV’s Kaycee Clark-Mellott.
Sawvel also suggested the field layout at Canvas Stadium contributed to the incident. He noted that Wyoming players had to cross the field to reach their locker room, increasing the potential for contact with fans. “We have a lot of fans that rush our field, too, so it's not like we're guiltless in anything college football. But one thing is our sideline and visiting locker room is on the same (side), there's no crossing the field. We had to cross the field there. We have an option there that we don't have,” Sawvel explained. He suggested moving the Wyoming team to the opposite sideline would allow them to return to their tunnel without crossing the field. “They could put us on the other sideline and we could come right out of our tunnel and we'd be right back in our tunnel and never have to cross fans,” he said. “We're not condoning it, but I do think in college football the more you have people on the field it is smart to take a look at the layout that you're asking the visiting team to get back to their locker room.”
