The University of Texas leads the first regular-season rankings of 13 Football Bowl Subdivision teams in Texas, according to The Chronicle. The rankings follow week one games of the 2026 season.
The Longhorns (1-0) took the top spot, improving from their previous ranking of 2nd, after a 59-7 victory over Texas State. Coach Will Muschamp’s defense and receiver Cam Coleman, along with quarterback Arch Manning, were key to the win. However, the source notes Texas State is not as strong a competitor as Ohio State, which Texas will face next week.
Texas A&M (1-0) is ranked second, up from 3rd last year, following a 50-0 win against Missouri State. Coach Mike Elko reminded the Aggies they haven’t “really won anything yet” despite their College Football Playoff appearance last year. Their next opponent is Arizona State.
Texas Tech (1-0) fell to third from first place last year. Mega-donor Cody Campbell stated the school wouldn't forget the Brendan Sorsby eligibility controversy and would continue to pass even when leading by a large margin. The Red Raiders defeated Abilene Christian, but were only up by 23 points in the fourth quarter.
Houston (1-0) is ranked fourth, improving from 6th last year, after a 33-20 win over Oregon State, though only 28,742 fans attended the game.
SMU (0-0) is ranked fifth, with a true reading on the team expected after their Monday night game against Florida State.
Rice (1-0) is sixth, after coach Scott Abel improved to 2-0 in season openers with a 31-3 win over Houston Christian. They will face Notre Dame next.
UTSA (1-0) is seventh, with quarterback Owen McCown performing at a high level in a 45-16 win over UT-Rio Grande Valley. Baylor (0-1) is eighth after a close loss to Auburn where a two-point conversion attempt by tight end Matthew Klopfenstein fell just short.
North Texas (0-1) is ninth, despite limiting Indiana to 46 offensive plays in a 52-16 loss. Texas State (0-1) is tenth, after being called “pretty terrible” by coach G.J. Kinne in a 59-7 loss to Texas. Sam Houston (0-1) is eleventh, losing 24-21 on the road at Troy. UTEP (0-1) is twelfth after a 51-0 loss to Oklahoma.
