A new teaser trailer for Alex Gibney’s documentary “Musk” presents conflicting views of the entrepreneur, questioning whether he is a groundbreaking inventor or a controversial figure. The film will premiere at the Venice International Film Festival and continue to the Toronto International Film Festival.
The 48-second teaser features footage of spacecraft and astronautical devices accompanied by commentary that highlights Elon Musk’s polarizing nature. Voices describe Musk as “possibly the greatest living inventor,” “the real-life Iron Man,” and “one of the greatest builders of all time.”
However, the tone shifts as the montage progresses, with voices also labeling him as “the greatest capitalist in history,” but also as “chaotic, random, capricious, manifestly cruel and selfish,” and even “a fascist.” The teaser concludes with the statement, “Elon is a nuke,” as a spacecraft implodes in flames.
Alex Gibney began work on the nearly four-hour documentary in March 2023. Musk preemptively called the project “a hit piece” on his X/Twitter account, prompting Gibney to respond by asking, “how would you know?” The film will feature an original song, “Let Me Sell You a Dream,” written and performed by Talking Heads frontman David Byrne.
The documentary is produced by Jigsaw Productions, Double Agent, Closer Media, and Anonymous Content, with Ronan Farrow and Lawrence Wright also serving as producers.
