Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. was limited in practice for the second consecutive day due to a back injury, and coach Mike McCarthy has declined to comment on his availability for Sunday’s game. The situation is further complicated by Porter’s ongoing contract negotiations.
Portter is currently listed with a back injury. According to Alan Saunders of steelersnow.com, McCarthy stated, "The plan for Joey today is still working through the ramp-up stage, based on what he accomplished yesterday." McCarthy added, “I understand the interest of who’s going to play and who’s not going to play, but I think clearly that’s something that I’m not going to get into for the competition of the game.”
Portter missed all of training camp on the active/physically unable to perform list before passing a physical and being added to the roster when the team reduced its roster size from 90 to 53 players. He is seeking a long-term contract extension before the start of the season and has not committed to playing without an agreement. The Steelers have a team policy of not negotiating contracts once the season begins.
Portter is due to make $3.924 million in 2026 and is reportedly seeking a deal comparable to those received by Devon Witherspoon and Christian Gonzalez.
