PHOENIX (AP) — The Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-2 on Saturday night, fueled by a six-run fifth inning. Ezequiel Duran hit a two-run single and Wyatt Langford added a solo home run during the rally. The Rangers improved to 73-76, remaining two games back of the final American League wild card spot.
The Diamondbacks fell to 79-70 and are now 1 1/2 games behind the San Diego Padres in the National League wild card race. A crucial replay call in the fifth inning favored the Rangers. With the score tied 1-1, first base umpire Bill Miller initially ruled Corey Seager safe at first base after a play at the bag, determining that pitcher Brandon Pfaadt's foot was off the bag. Arizona challenged the call, but video review upheld Miller’s decision.
Following the upheld call, the Rangers scored five additional runs. Pfaadt (7-3) allowed six runs on 10 hits over 6 2/3 innings, with seven strikeouts. Texas right-hander Kumar Rocker gave up one run on two hits and two walks over four innings, striking out five. Langford’s home run was his 17th of the season.
Two-time All-Star Nathan Eovaldi (elbow) returned to the Rangers from the injured list, pitching in relief for the first time since 2019. He pitched 2 2/3 innings, giving up one run on four hits and striking out two. Arizona will send LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (15-5, 2.55 ERA) to the mound on Sunday.
