Portland High School defeated Lansing Sexton 28-13 in the opening game of conference play. Running back Carson Spenski led the Raiders’ offense, while the defense pressured Sexton’s quarterbacks throughout the game.
Portland’s offense gained momentum late in the first quarter when Carson Spenski broke free for a 52-yard run, setting up a 2-yard touchdown by Alex Atwell. Spenski later scored a 12-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, extending Portland’s lead to 28-7. He rushed for over 100 yards in the game.
A key moment occurred in the second quarter when a bobbled snap during a potential scoring drive was recovered by Portland offensive lineman Tristian Pohl, who then ran 14 yards for a touchdown, giving Portland the lead.
Portland’s defense played a significant role in the victory, consistently pressuring Sexton quarterbacks Abdual Carter-Foreman and Zion Mathis. Evan Pung and Liam Wolfe each recorded two sacks, and Tayin Curtis had an interception in the end zone. Sexton’s scoring was limited to an early touchdown and a late 16-yard pass from Carter-Foreman to Willie Brown.
Portland coach John Novara stated, “We're a run-first football team, and the kids did a good job of that tonight against a very talented Sexton team. We played great defense, and I think that group really set the tone for us, and that's what we're going to do. We're going to live and die by our identity.” Portland’s CAAC White winning streak remains intact, and they will next face Olivet, who defeated Lansing Catholic.
